Tonight I wanted to just reflect on something that I’ve been thinking about since our last Tuesday Zoom life group. We started, (and I say started because we ran out of time and never finished it, im sure there will be a return to it in the near future!), a great discussion about why and also how we should share the Gospel of Jesus…The thing that provoked my thinking however was specifically the WHY.
I’ve heard it said by many a preacher that the why is simple, ‘If we had the cure to cancer what kind of people would we be not to share it, well we as Christians have a cure to death! Jesus’... I totally get this and on Tuesday I even gave this as part of my reason, however that didn’t fully satisfy the group around the question why? And there was some interesting thoughts raised by people. But the conversation carried on.
As I reminisce, and remember the people I have seen and been around in the Christian world, I look at my time in CfaN and am reminded of Reinhard Bonnke, a Great Evangelist who preached to millions and saw millions come to know Jesus, Daniel Kolenda the same, Nathan Morris, Todd White, Billy Graham, Luis Palau, Carlos Anaconda, and then my old Pastor Pete Spafford, John Bedford these guys would and some still do, get up and tell people the Gospel…I’m sure some would say they were arrogant to think they know the answer to all of the worlds issues, Jesus, and then even worse to preach that at people, but still they stand and they preach and they proclaim ‘Jesus’.
You see the WHY isn’t a clever saying about cures, it’s a good saying, but its actually a command from God Himself. Jesus told us to ‘…Go and make disciples of the nations…’ – Matthew 28, and again in Romans 10, ‘…For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?...’, there are other passages in the Bible that direct us to tell people about Jesus but these 2 and especially the Romans passage stick out to me right now.
So to me there is no choice, I have to tell you…God loves you so much that He would be tormented, humiliated, beaten, spat on and even die for you, which is exactly what Jesus did at the Cross, paying your ransom, paying for you to have a freedom you have never known, for you to be set free, liberated, given a new life, to be SAVED.
That earlier argument about arrogance is only true when our motives for sharing the gospel, are about us, about us winning the lost, us having a big church, us proving we can preach a compelling message, when we put our desire to see someone saved for OUR own reasons before THEIR need to be saved…
You see 1 Corinthians 13 tells us clearly, without Love we are nothing more than a clanging cymbal! We are just a noise to people, when we combine our obedience to Gods command with His love for the lost working in us that focuses us to see them as Jesus does, then compassion compels us to share the Gospel… Arrogance is no where to be seen and people, see and hear the Authentic and Genuine love that the Gospel declares, Gods Love for them.
I would love to hear your thoughts on why we should share the Gospel, leave me a comment below.
